The movement of smoke and hot gases in underground tunnel fires is discussed and some numerical data given for the backflow against the flow. The use of a forced ventilation installation to clear the smoke is considered and it is suggested that in general little is to be gained from it. The creation of a natural draught may be a more useful method of clearing heat and smoke.
