About the PhD project:

Global warming will give rise to increasing temperatures, less rain, and longer periods with dry weather conditions. Such hot and dry periods will increase the risk of large wildfires in regions unfamiliar with these types of disasters, one such region is Northern Europe where both the number and the size of wildfires are expected to increase. To prepare for and reduce the risk of disastrous wildfires, societal safety must be further developed to predict these types of disasters. This project will contribute to the prediction of wildfires risk and spread by implementing new methods for detecting risk factors together with new models for fire spread.

The candidate will work experimentally with fire spread in Scandinavian vegetation. From small-scale to medium-scale in our laboratory facilities, as well as real-scale in the field, the fire behaviour of different vegetation will be determined and analysed. The influence of different parameters such as weather conditions and topography will be also determined for the fire behaviour of the specific vegetation that can be encountered in the Scandinavian region.

Applicants should submit a project outline of maximum 5 pages, describing topic, choice of theory and method as well as plan for carrying out a potential project. The preliminary project descriptions will be used for assessing the qualifications of the candidates. The final project description will be developed together with the supervisors.

Qualifications:

Formal qualifications:

  • The PhD research fellow should have a master’s degree in (or closely related to) fire safety engineering
  • Good understanding and writing of English language

Wanted qualifications:

  • Education or experience from fire safety is an advantage but not a prerequisite
  • Previous experience from work in fire safety engineering laboratory
  • Knowledge on instrumentation

In addition to the required educational background, the following criteria will be evaluated: competence and grades on completed course work, quality of the master’s thesis (excellent grade, equivalent of grade B or better on the ECTS grading system), publications (if any), communication skills, research and work experience.

The candidate must be diligent and display the ability to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out high-quality research and to publish the results in national seminars, international workshops, conferences, and journals.

The PhD research fellow must enroll in a PhD program. An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made and the supervisor(s) will help with this procedure. The candidate must be enrolled as a PhD student within 3 months from the start of the employment.

1. Open MS/PhD Student Positions – Topic: Wildfire Spread – Experiments and Modelling

Start Date: 8/15/2022 (approximate)

Applications are being sought for two Research Assistants (PhD students in Fire Protection Engineering) to conduct fundamental research in the areas of wildland fire spread and firebrands spotting, focusing on the multi-scale physics of the interactions between fire, wind and solid fuels (structural and/or vegetative). The research will include larger scale laboratory experiments and associated CFD modelling of wildfire behavior.

Applicants are expected to possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (or related field) with research or educational background in fire, combustion and/or thermal sciences. Successful candidates should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. 2. Open Post-doctoral Scholar Position

Applications are being sought for a qualified and motivated postdoctoral fellow to conduct research in multiple areas of fire science, including but not limited to: wildland fire behavior, firebrand spotting and impact, material flammability, and microgravity fire behavior. The primary responsibility will be to support existing and upcoming projects. Experience in fire experimentation and diagnostics and/or in fire simulations (e.g., FDS and FireFOAM) is required.

Additional responsibilities will include research support on collaborative projects with collaborators, as well as proposal development and grant applications. This position may have opportunities for teaching in the areas of thermal fluids, fire dynamics, and simulations.

The postdoctoral fellow will be required to publish scholarly papers and to take on a mentorship role for undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate should have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and strong written and verbal communication skills. A one-year appointment is anticipated, with the ability to be extended. 3. Research Associate (PhD student) to conduct research in  Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires

Applications are being sought for one Research Associate (PhD student) to conduct research in the area of Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires and particularly the development of the necessary data to parameterize numerical models of firebrand generation, transport, and deposition, with a focus on NIST’s Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The project will focus on obtaining the firebrand source terms as a function of the key factors that affect the generation of firebrands from a range of source fuels and explore the influence of particle characteristics on the transport of particles. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and Cal Poly.
